Buying one of the fastest growing franchises in the market is not enough to ensure optimum profit for your business. Although you have invested for name recognition, training, and branding, other critical factors like site location, employee management, and efficient operations are up to you. Let us look at the 5 steps to starting a growing franchise.

One of the biggest misconceptions of buying a franchise is that you will be served your own business on a silver platter.  The reality is far from this idea.  In fact, the foundation of building a successful franchise starts with making hard decisions and taking risks that you are first hesitant to take.  The most important decisions are made even before you set up your shop or buy one of the fastest going franchises.

Buying one of the fastest growing franchises in the market is not enough to ensure optimum profit for your business.  Although you have invested for name recognition, training, and branding, other critical factors like site location, employee management, and efficient operations are up to you.  Let us look at the 5 steps to starting a growing franchise.

1.  Setting Lifestyle And Priority Changes

If you have not managed a small business before, you should be prepared to make drastic changes in your lifestyle and make critical priority decisions.  These questions come up when you start thinking about how much you are willing to invest in a franchise.  Part of the financial investment includes time allotment, emotional investment, and passing on opportunities in your life.  Starting a franchise is a commitment, and part of committing to an idea is to study it carefully.

Anticipate the changes in your schedule.  When you start a franchise, you may have to give up your time at home, or skip some work days to attend to problems with your business.  Your adjustment to these changes is a significant factor in the success of your franchise in the long run.

Answer these questions first:  Will this be something that you will enjoy doing?  How much time will you spend on the business?  Do you have people you can trust to delegate critical tasks?  How big or how small do you want your operation to be?  When you have answered these hard questions, and you are still convinced that franchising is the right thing for you, go ahead and take the dive.

2.  Educate Yourself; Learn More Options

Attend franchise expositions and trade shows to understand the landscape of a franchise business.  Read resource articles, market surveys, and feasibility studies.  Decide on a niche market and define your chosen selling point.  Your ideal franchise may be one of the fastest growing franchises in the market, but small franchises can also generate the profits that you need.

3.  Select A Franchise

The easy (and costly) way of starting a franchise is to go for the sure thing, by picking the fastest growing franchise for your market.  Picking a popular franchise has huge benefits.  You do not have to work hard for brand recognition; you are sure that you are joining a dynamic company with a lot of potential for growth, and you are confident that you are buying a tried and tested formula.  However, these benefits are counterweighted by significant considerations.  You have to evaluate if the cost of buying a known commodity will put you in prime position in your target market.

Make a list of the type of markets where you want to participate.  List the known limitations of the market.  Weigh the potential of the market against its limitation, and determine if your findings are applicable to your locality.  Once you have made a short list of possible franchise candidates, talk to their franchise representatives and discuss your situation.  Ask them how they can help you in making sure that your business will be successful.  Evaluate how much the franchise will ultimately cost you.  The cost of buying a franchise is fixed at first, but you are also subject to service charges that differ over time.

4.  Gather Your Resources

There are two broad types of input, capital outlay and human resources.  Pick an excellent core to jumpstart your franchise.  The franchiser has hiring methods to help you evaluate candidates for management positions.  If you want to keep the hiring in-house, start by evaluating your own resume.  Assess your skills and limitations.  This way, you can find a manager that can complement your skill set.  If your selected franchise is one of the fastest growing franchises in the market, they may recommend that the potential manager have a specific skill set.  Listen to your franchiser’s suggestions because they have thorough knowledge on what works and what does not work in their business.

5.  Launch And Succeed

Now that you have a franchise to work with, made critical life decisions, studied your market, and gathered your resources, all that is left is to bring your full energy to your franchise toward a successful launch.  The first two years of a franchise are critical since you have to establish your customer base.  During this stretch, watch your franchise closely and accomplish periodic evaluations.  As long as you have set the proper foundations, you can fight through any setbacks in your small business.
